In 1969, C&B Italia (now B&B Italia) invited Gaetano Pesce to experiment with a new polyurethane foam. Thus, Pesce’s UP Series was born. Il Piede (or UP 7) was the last of the seven seating elements in the series. It was created by pouring expanding polyurethane foam into a mold based on the human foot, enlarged six times. The example shown in Different Tendencies took the additional step of coating the cured foam in a dyed polyurethane elastomer “skin.” This is an exceedingly rare item as only this example was produced in red as a production prototype. The work has been made available by Gaetano Pesce and comes directly from the designer’s studio archive.
