Superhouse is pleased to announce its participation at the 19th edition of Design Miami/ Miami Beach. The exhibition runs December 5 - 10, 2023 in booth C02 at Design Miami, Convention Center Drive and 19th Street, Miami Beach, Florida.

Superhouse’s Curio, The Subversive Hand, highlights the explosive popularity of fiber arts in art and design in recent years through the work of 11 gallery artists and designers, who hail from seven US States and three countries. The title of the curation references the seminal 1984 publication The Subversive Stitch by Rozsika Parker, which recounts the Western history of embroidery, and how it became a craft traditionally undertaken by women, largely ignored by the broader fine arts community. For this presentation, Superhouse shifts the focus to artists and designers with diverse identities, presenting fiber art spanning four decades in a range of materials and expressions, both traditional and radical.

Artists and designers on view:
Aaron Blendowski, Alfhild Kulper, Elizabeth Browning Jackson, Ellen Pong, Kim Mupangilai, Olivia Vigo, Sarah Burns, Sean Gerstley, Sue Ravitz, Tom Loeser, and Wendy Maruyama.

Ellen Pong Scaffold (1), 2023. Wood-fired ceramic.

Wendy Maruyama Blanket Chest, 2023. Polychromed wood.

Superhouse’s exhibition marks the return to furniture for legendary artist Wendy Maruyama after over a decade focusing on sculpture. The San Diego-based artist created a polychromed wood blanket chest, a form used to house textiles, while the exterior and interior are hand-painted inspired by printed fabrics and quilts. In addition, Sean Gerstley worked with Maharam’s line of upholstery fabrics to create for his lounge chair custom patchwork cushions, echoing the patterns of his ceramic tile furniture. Ellen Pong unveils large scale, wood-fired ceramic vessels constructed through a process of pattern making, similar to how garments are made. And, Alfhild Külper’s seven-foot wool tapestry, a contemporary reinterpretation of those of the Northern Renaissance, hangs as a focal point in the booth.

Superhouse partnered with British luxury paint and wallpaper manufacturer Farrow & Ball on the installation design for the booth. To provide a dramatic backdrop for the pieces on view, the pair selected a beautiful blue (Lobster No. CB7) in their Dead Flat finish. The hue comes from the latest Farrow & Ball collection, Carte Blanche, created in collaboration with American fashion designer Christopher John Rogers.
